Planning Poker online

Planning Poker helps agile teams agree on how big a piece of work is. Everyone estimates in secret, then all estimates are revealed at once – so the team talks about real differences instead of following the loudest voice.

What is Planning Poker?

Planning Poker is a consensus-based estimation technique. Each team member holds a set of cards with values, usually story points. For every backlog item, everyone picks a card face down. When all have chosen, the cards are turned over together.

Why agile teams use it

  • Hidden, simultaneous votes prevent anchoring on the first number said aloud.
  • Large gaps between estimates reveal open questions and hidden risks early.
  • Everyone in the team gets a voice, not only the most experienced people.
  • The discussion builds a shared understanding of the work.

How a round works

  1. The Product Owner presents a user story and answers questions.
  2. Every developer picks a card in secret.
  3. All cards are revealed at the same time.
  4. The people with the highest and lowest estimates explain their reasoning.
  5. The team votes again until the estimates converge.

How onexip Scrum Poker supports this

In onexip Scrum Poker you open a room, share the invite link and estimate right in the browser. Votes stay hidden until someone clicks “Show votes”. After the reveal you see the distribution, the average and the median, and “Clear” starts the next round. You can choose Fibonacci, modified Fibonacci, linear 0–10, powers of 2 or T-shirt sizes, and pick one of several table designs.
